| 10th August 2003 - Triple King | Chris Hewitt lead the team in triples in 2003. He also placed highly in all other categories, with the third highest RBI total (14), tied for second with 17 runs and fourth in slugging and on base percentage to name but a few. These numbers highlight the increasing power Chris has possessed over the last couple of years, especially when considering Chris could only attend one away game this year. |
| 20th July 2003 - Hewitt hurts Express with bat and ball, helping Strikers to victory | Chris Hewitt helped Barnsley beat the Manchester Express team 17-19, in a closely fought and tense game. Chris hit 3 - 3 with a triple, notching up 3 RBI's and 3 Runs, he also managed to draw 3 walks. More amazingly, Chris was also the starting pitcher, earning his 4th win of the season in a complete game. |
The Player
|
Chris has continued to pitch well this season and this was highlighted throughout due to a long-term shoulder injury to regular starting pitcher Kris Allott. Chris is able to spot all his pitches on both the inside and outside corners and this is the main reason for his success. His fastball has more fire in recent weeks and does seem to catch some hitters unawares, a good addition to his arsenal this season. Chris can get demoralized by poor play in the field losing him outs, and then compound these by making poorer pitches due to lack of concentration. This is more the problem of the defense than his I suppose! Speaking of which, in his usual role at First, Chris outshines all of the Strikers with his defensive ability. He is often seen making diving plays and scoops more out of the dirt than... * enter witty simile here *, very impressive considering the Shaw Lane bobbles. When Chris is pitching the Strikers need to address the hole he leaves at 1st. At bat Chris has a great strike zone awareness and often has those outstanding 1.000 days, only inconsistency week in week out is preventing him from winning a batting title. If Chris could have attended all away games (he only attended one away game in 2003) Chris should have been able to lead the team in RBI's and runs. In the new field Chris will have a longer right field in which to pull the ball, this could hopefully mean a few more of those long sprints to third. On base Chris is not only super quick (I can't remember him ever being caught stealing) but never makes mistakes, he gets the best lead at third and best jump on passed balls of all the squad which can be the difference between winning and losing. 2003 Profile -
Chris was once the starting pitcher for the Strikers, before K Allot made
the Barnsley rubber his own (PITCHING rubber). Chris is now the regular
1st baseman and is possibly the best defensive player on the team. Chris
takes short hops with ease and loves to make diving catches. (Little too
much for my liking! You know the type, dive when the balls an inch from
their glove, do 6 rolls and a cartwheel, stand up like nothings happened
)
Hitting, Chris has found a new aggressive stance
and personality, developing him into more of a power hitter. He'll hope
to hit a few home runs this season with Barnsley's short right field.
