Game Update: 21 July 2002 - Barnsley Strikers -v- Edinburgh Diamond Devils

Barnsley went into the game with a good record against Edinburgh, being the only team to beat them last year. However confidence was not so high this time around having lost to the devils at the beginning of the season 23 - 4.

The game again started well for Kris Allott who struck out the first two batters. G. Crawford then grounded out on the second pitch for a quick top of the first. Edinburgh Starter M. Jenson started equally as well allowing only a single by Alan Bowers in the first. (Bowers stole both second and third base to lead the team with 15 for the season)

In the top of the second S. Spurlock led off for the Devils with a triple, but Kris pitched out of the jam striking out the next two batters, a groundout left the game scoreless. Barnsley failed to score in the bottom of the inning leaving two on base.

In the third M. Jenson lead off with a walk and scored the opening run of the game with an M. Donaldson sac fly. Both teams failed to score in their next at bats and the score going into the bottom of the forth was 1 - 0.

K. Allott, 1st up to the plate, hit a double taking his tally to a massive 14. After moving to third base on the groundout by S. Bennett he scored on a single by his dad, T. Allott (21 RBI's). M. Jenson struck out 2 Strikers in the inning to leave the game tied at 1 - 1.

The devils had a big inning in the top of the fifth with 8 hitters stepping up to the plate. Despite an error and a hit batsman Kris struck out 2 to leave the inning with the bases loaded and only two runs scored. Batting in the fifth and two runs down, the Strikers went on a hitting rampage. D. Kilkenny started with a double (5),and was brought home by a solid single to right field by left hander C. Hewitt (8 RBI's). The next four Barnsley Strikers also hit singles scoring a further 4 runs (K. Allott, S. Bennett, M. Trepczyk and T. Allott) and earning them all an RBI. D. Kilkenny ended the innings scoring with a two RBI single to Right Field. This left the score at 8 - 3.

Edinburgh scored an unearned run in the 6th but it would be their last until the ninth inning, partly because of some great defence by Catcher Alan Bowers. This allowed the Strikers to further the score to 9 - 4 in the 7th when N. Whitehead reached on a walk (19) and scored on a passed ball against reliever G. Crawford who had taken the mound in the 7th.

Going into the top of the 9th Barnsley looked to Starter Kris Allott for the complete game. A leadoff single was quickly followed by a huge Homerun by Cleanup hitter S. Spurlock (3 - 3, BB, HBP). Barnsley may have started to worry when on the next pitch Kris hit the batter in the thigh, but this was the last Devil to reach base as Kris capped off another good performance with a groundout and a passed ball strikeout on which the in-form Alan Bowers made another good play to record the final out.

Barnsley Win 9 - 6

Game Update: 23rd June 2002 - Barnsley Strikers -v- Manchester Express

Game One (details updated 9th July 2002)

Barnsley starter Kris Allott struck out the side in the first 2 innings to leave the Express scoreless. Barnsley, batting at the top of the 1st had 4 reach on walks and 1 on a hit by pitch, helping them to score 3. A lone run by C. Hewitt in the second made the score 4 – 0. In the 3rd newcomer D. Sutcliffe scored his first RBI of the season on a sacrifice, and backed this up with a second RBI, again on a sac, in his next at bat in the 4th. Some good hitting by Manchester and poor Barnsley defence made the score going into the 6th tied at 9.

Barnsley batted through the order in the 6th scoring a further 4 runs, the highlight a 2 RBI single by A. Trepczyk. Manchester put further pressure on Barnsley in the bottom of the inning, scoring 6 to go into the 7th leading by 2 runs.

Down by two in the last inning Barnsley needed some strong hitting to get them back into a game they should have made certain of winning. And they did it! Scoring 7 in the inning made the score 20 – 15. Then K. Allott added 2 to his strike out total in the bottom of the inning (totalling 15) as the Express scored just 1 to end the game with a BARNSLEY WIN 20 – 16.

Runners scoring: K Allott, T Allott (3), A Bowers, C Hewitt (3), D Kilkenny (3), A Trepczyk (3), M Trepczyk (2), N Whitehead (4)
RBI's by: K Allott (3), T Allott, A Bowers (2), C Hewitt, D Kilkenny, D Sutcliffe (2), A Trepczyk (2), N Whitehead

Game Two

Barnsley scored 3 in the top of the first to take an early lead against Express starter R. Garcia. Barnsley's 2nd Starter C. Hewitt started well, giving up just a single run in each of the first two innings, with one strike out. At the end of three innings the game was tied at 4 with strong pitching from both teams.

These strong performances continued in the 4th with neither team giving up any runs. In the top of the 5th Barnsley's heart of the order (3rd, 4th and 5th hitters) went down in order for the first time this season, leaving the way for Manchester to take the lead with 1 run in the bottom of the 5th. Barnsley again failed to score in the top of the inning but C. Hewitt battled on to keep it tight not only giving up a single in the bottom of the 6th.

Like in the 1st game of this double header Barnsley needed to score to make Manchester bat in the bottom of the 7th. And they did it again! Barnsley scored 4 runs to make the Barnsley lead 3 as Manchester went up to bat. Unfortunately for Barnsley however, the come back wasn't complete as Manchester rallied to score 4 with no outs and make the final score Strikers 8 - Express 9.

Game Update: 16 June 2002 - Barnsley Strikers -v- Liverpool Trojans

Game One

Barnsley's 3 game winning streak was broken by the sometimes over vocal Liverpool Trojans. The Strikers held on to take it to the 7th inning with a score line of 1 - 10 at the top of the 5th.

Solid pitching from Kris Allott kept Barnsley's defense tight, striking out 11 Trojans during the duration of the game. Batting performance was slow, held back from the Torjans fast pitcher, who managed 6 K's. It wasn't long before solid contact was made and bases were occupied. Failing to capitalise when the bases were loaded left the game at 3 - 10 Liverpool Trojans.

Runners scoring: Alan Bowers, Steve Bennett, Chris Hewitt
RBI's by: Kris Allott (2) and Chris Hunton

Game Two

The starting pitcher from the 1st game, Kris Allott moved to 3rd base, Chris Hewitt into pitch and Chris Hunton into catch, after his good performance the week before. The game was tight from the start and it was looking like it would go all the way.

Batting improved with cracking hits from Damien Kilkenny earning him a single and a double. One of our young hopefuls, Andy Trepczyk struck a well hit single in the 6th getting him on base. Not to mention his 2 catches made in centre field.

Bottom of the 7th produced a beautiful bunt from Steve Bennett, leaving the Trojan infielders out of position, he made it safely (and easily) to 1st. With no one covering 3rd base Kris Allott (already on a steel to 2nd) reached 3rd base.

Chris Hewitt, pitching well, gave up 5 runs in the 1st and then shut-out the Trojan offense until the 6th. Clocking up a total of 5 K's. The score going into the Bottom of the 7th was 9 - 3. With Barnsley fielding and bases loaded an error by the catch allowed Trojans to advance their score leaving it at 14 - 6

Runners scoring: D Kilkenny(2), C Hewitt (2), C Hunton, K Allott
RBI's by: Kris Allott (3)

Both games scored by: Sarah Robinson and Johnathon Malahan

Game Update: 26 May 2002 - Barnsley Strikers -v- Shropshire Panthers

There does seem to be some confusion over the recent Double Header against Shropshire Panthers.

The games were held on May 19, 2002 at the now infamous Barnsley Home Ground situated at Shaw Lane Rugby Club. The recently dubbed "Siberian" ground held up to its reputation. 15 minutes before the match was schedule to start the heavens opened and a monsoon shower pelted players and spectators.

Who would have known it.. the rain stopped, blue skies drifted over and the game was looking set to start.

Game One: Shropshire took the first game in a not too convincing performance. Unfortunately I can't remember the score that will have to wait.

Game Two What kind I say.. "The Boy's dun good!". Heads up baseball all the way. Congrats Lads!!

After much thought and consideration.. for you lot who read this!!

Shropshire lost
23 - 5
